our 100th Anniversary Reception
held April 12, 2012
Mark your calendars!
As we " travel through a century" this year, sampling 100 years of movies, May brings us to 1948.
Let's look at the era...WWII ended in 1945. In 1947 the big blaze on Mt Desert Isle burned 3,500 acres,
and Chuck Yeager was the first to fly faster than the speed of sound creating a "sonic boom".
In 1948 itself - Babe Ruth died in August, 99.9% of Americans did not own a TV,
and Gandhi was assassinated by a fellow Hindu for being too much a pacifist.
Also, tons of movies were made and enjoyed...especially in this pre-TV time.
Newsreels still preceded the shows.
People wanted to go out, get together and be entertained now that war was behind them.
A movie theatre was the hot place to be! ....Just like now."
7:00 ~ White Heat (114 min.) James Cagney delivers "made it,ma! top of the world",
best ending line of a movie, in this schizo, noirish thriller of a
gangster movie run amok. Crazy guy, crazy for his mom.
At 7:10 ~ On the Town (98 min) Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Jules Munshin
in exuberant musical celebrating the American spirit in the 40's,
a simpler time when sailors on leave danced around NYC.
Leonard Bernstein score and the city itself co-star!
